The Growth of our Church
The Byzantine faith is part of the universal Church that originated with Christ and the apostles. The history of our faith starts with the Passion of Christ, His Resurrection, and His commissioning of the apostles.
The Church quickly spread from Jerusalem to the other major port cities at the time of the apostles – Antioch, Alexandria, and Rome – and from there throughout the entire Roman Empire. Constantinople later became an additional major port city from which the Faith would spread. It is from Constantinople that we, along with a number of other Eastern churches, trace our origins.
Each of these cities served as hubs from the spread of the Faith. Since the bishops of those cities were direct successors to the Apostles, they became major Patriarchal Sees, originating the various liturgical rites that today make up part of the deposit of Catholic Tradition. We are in full Communion with Rome and the Holy Father, but have a unique tradition stemming from our own liturgical tradition out of Constantinople (Istanbul).
